Phoenix Coyotes forward Raffi Torres and the National Hockey League Players Association are going to appeal Torres’ 25 game suspension handed down by Brendan Shanahan. Torres received the suspension after a late hit to the head of Chicago Blackhawks forward Marian Hossa. Hossa was seriously injured because of the hit and had to be removed from the ice by a stretcher.
Torres received the 25 game suspension because he is a repeat offender, the hit was late and Torres left his feet on the play. Torres and the NHLPA aren’t appealing the ban however they are appealing the length of the suspension. NHL commissioner Gary Bettman will act as arbitrator and the appeal could take place as early as next week.
