The Washington Capitals tied up their series against the New York Rangers with a 3-2 victory this afternoon. Alexander Ovechkin opened the scoring in the first period with a unassisted slap shot. Artem Anisimov evened things up in the second period but Nicklas Backstrom answered right back to give the Capitals a 2-1 lead. Marian Gaborik tied the game up in the final minutes of the 2nd period but it was Mike Green‘s late powerplay goal that was the winner for the Capitals.
After a slow start the Capitals and Rangers really picked up the pace in third period. Rangers’ goaltender Henrik Lundqvist made 23 out of 26 saves and Capitals goaltender Braden Holtby stopped 18 of the 20 shots he faced. Mike Green was the hero for Washington today as the Capitals evened up the series against the first place New York Rangers.
