New York Rangers head coach John Tortorella has never been shy about sharing the way he feels with the media. Tortorella was fined $20,000 for comments he made after Thursday night’s 5-2 loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins. He was very vocal about the Brooks Orpik hit on Derek Stepan. Orpik hit Stepan knee-on-knee and was given a 5 minute major penalty because of it.
However that did not satisfy Tortorella. He went on to vent to the media about how the Pittsburgh Penguins are always complaining about hits like that and now they are the ones doing them. He basically called the Penguins cry babies and said that their two stars are whiners. He also went on to say that the Penguins organization is one of the most arrogant organizations in the NHL.
Tortorella is no stranger to being fined for comments made after hockey games but I am a little disappointed with the NHL on this one. I mean Brooks Orpik wasn’t punished for the hit and Tortorella had every right to be angry. When Sidney Crosby got hurt Mario Lemieux was the first one to voice his opinion stating that he wasn’t sure if he even wanted to be part of the NHL anymore if they were going to allow head shots and players to get away with hits that like. I know obviously $20,000 isn’t a lot of money to John Tortorella but they fact of the matter is it’s just comments. It’s his own opinion. Are we not allowed to speak freely anymore?
Tortorella isn’t the only person that has called out the Pittsburgh Penguins on their dirty play this week. Philadelphia Flyers head coach Peter Laviolette was fined $10,000 for his comments and actions following the Joe Vitale hit on Danny Briere. Mike Milbury basically declared open season on Sidney Crosby before recanting his statement and apologizing to the league.
You know no one really cares one way or another what John Tortorella, Peter Laviolette or any other coach has to say but the thing that is getting my attention here is the fact that the Penguins do complain a lot. The Orpik hit was a dirty hit and the NHL let him get away with it. If Orpik was on another team do you think he would of gotten away with that hit? I don’t. Don’t get me wrong the Penguins have a great hockey team but they seem to get special treatment from the NHL and that’s not right in my opinion!
If you missed John Tortorella’s comments and would like to hear them for yourselves then here they are:
