The Leafs Are Officially Eliminated

Too little too late for the Toronto Maple Leafs again this season. The Leafs couldn’t seem to get their act together in time to make a run at the post season. Newly acquired head coach Randy Carlyle obviously wasn’t given enough time to turn his team around. In the beginning of February the Leafs occupied 6th place in the Eastern Conference and now they are way down in 14th place. The only team they are ahead of is the Montreal Canadiens who might be in last place but they have a better record over the last 10 games then the Leafs do. In their last 24 games the Leafs have gone 5-16-3 and they haven’t been able to win on home ice in 10 games.

Toronto‘s recent losses have completely destroyed all hopes of making the playoffs. Even before they were shutout last night against the Carolina Hurricanes Leaf fans everywhere knew what was going to happen. The Leafs have missed the playoffs for their 7th straight season and they have been without the Cup since 1967.

Can the Leafs managed to end their season on a winning note now that the playoff pressure is gone? Will they finally be able to give fans in the Air Canada Center something to cheer about? Or will they do more damage to their fans pride and continue to fall in the standings? Well they don’t have much further to fall. They are only 3 points ahead of the last place Montreal Canadiens and they will come head-to-head with their rivals the Canadiens on April 7th to end the season. With only 5 games left for the Leafs this season they better make the most of it and give their fans something to cheer about!
