Buying Your First Helmet
Your helmet is your next most important piece of equipment aside from your skates. Please do not buy a used helmet. This is nothing to fool around with. The helmet must have a HECC sticker and another sticker saying it is a certified helmet. You will not be allowed to play if these stickers are not on the helmet.
When buying your helmet you will be picking from the junior section. Some teams want a certain color of helmet but this is rare. Just be sure to check with your team before buying a new helmet in case they do want a specific color. Black is great.
You must have a full cage and chin strap on your helmet. This is very important and can save your life. There are screws in the helmet that allow you to slide and adjust the helmet to fit your head safely and comfortably. Keep your helmet on tight. You don’t want it sliding over your eyes. You must always wear one when you’re on the bench or in the penalty box unless the penalty box is surrounded by glass. Take care of your helmet and it will take care of you.
Those that wear glasses find it difficult to wear them with a helmet on. Contact lenses are also prone to falling out. Most vision centers have a great piece of equipment that are like eye goggles for swimming. The players I have asked love them!
Not all division require mouth guards, but I would wear one just in case. Pee Wee does.
