The Buffalo Sabres came charging out of the gate when Jason Pominville scored on Pittsburgh’s Brent Johnson in under a minute from puck drop. Buffalo’s Derek Roy scored approximately four minutes later to give the Sabres an early 2-0 lead.
Paul Gaustad scored on Johnson early in the 2nd period but the Penguins were finally able to get on the board with a goal from Deryk Engelland on Ryan Miller. The Sabres still manage to hold onto a 2 goal lead going into the 3rd period with a score of 3-1.
There was a Pittsburgh goaltender change at the beginning of the 3rd period as Marc-Andre Fleury came in to relieve Brent Johnson. Jordan Staal opened up the scoring in the 3rd period with a goal on Ryan Miller to bring the Penguins back within one goal. Buffalo’s Drew Stafford regained the 2 goals lead only moments after Staal’s goal. Then Derek Roy got his 2nd goal of the afternoon to give the Sabres a 5-2 lead. Tyler Ennis gets Buffalo’s 6th goal of the night with just over three minutes left in the game.
