The New York Rangers will host the Washington Capitals in a Sunday afternoon game. The Rangers have been having a great season so far. They are 1st place in the Eastern Conference and have now won 2 games in a row. With a dominating 75 points thus far the Rangers look to better their record today against Washington. Marion Gaborik leads the Rangers with 48 points but their all-star player has been goaltender Henrik Lundqvist. Lundqvist is tied for the most shutouts in the NHL with 6 and tied for the best save percentage with.939.
The Rangers are hoping to capitalize on a struggling Washington team to extend their first place lead. The Washington Capitals have been struggling this season and are currently in 9th in the East. The Capitals are used to leading the league in points but right now they are scrambling for a playoff position. Alexander Ovechkin has been having an uncharacteristic season with only 23 goals and a total of 43 points. There was a lot of media hype over the firing of former coach Bruce Boudreau and Alexander Ovechkin’s relationship. With new coach Dale Hunter the Capitals haven’t been doing much better. The Capitals blew a 2 goal lead and lost in a shootout against the Winnipeg Jets on Thursday.
The Capitals are only won point out of a playoff spot but they are no-where near where they want to be. With desperation running through their veins the Capitals look to overcome the odds and beat the New York Rangers on home ice this afternoon.
